Topic: Workplace Bullying
The Silent Epidemic - Almost Half of Your Employees Are Dealing with Bullies at Work
Unfortunately workplace bullies are a problem many people face. Unlike playground bullies who often, not always, resort to using their fists, workplace bullies generally use words and actions to intimidate their victims.
During the past decade in the United States, the issue has attracted media attention, legal attention, and union attention. Recent estimates suggest that American businesses lose approximately $300 billion per year as a result of the loss of productivity, absenteeism, turnover, and increased medical costs due to the increased stress at work.
Bullying at work is the repeated, health-harming mistreatment, verbal abuse, or conduct which is threatening, humiliating, intimidating, or sabotage that interferes with work or some combination of the three. We’ve all worked with employees who think they walk on water. Their idea of collaboration is you doing most of the work and them taking most of the credit. This bullying type sometimes referred to by the media as the Prima Donna falls into one of the three defined types – the Chronic, Opportunistic and Accidental Bullies.
The presence of bullying reflects the nature of humans as they interact at work. It is no disgrace that it occurs in your organization too. It would be rare if it did not. What matters most is what we as HR Professionals do when it is brought to our attention.
