Inside Out: Unconscious Bias and Its Impact in the Workplace

Whether we know it or not, every one of us brings bias into the workplace.  In a study, identical resumes were created, one with a man’s name and the other with a woman’s name, and sent to hiring managers for the same position. Even with identical credentials, men were considered more competent and were selected more frequently and at a higher starting salary than women for the same position. This is one example of how unconscious bias shows up in the workplace. We will explore unconscious bias, discuss its impacts in the workplace, and discover ways to minimize those impacts.

Great Managers = Engaged Employees =

    Business Performance

While business leaders frequently acknowledge that keeping their employees happy is an important organizational goal, far fewer understand that it takes more than satisfied employees to drive financial growth and profitability. Studies indicate that less than half of an organization’s employees come to work with a compelling, active, passionate interest in their work. It is vital to understand how to create an environment that engages employees. We will look at the difference between “satisfied” employees and engaged” employees; and the three core activities that every manager must do well.

    Successfully Defending Worker’s Comp Claims

Does the phrase “workers’ compensation claim” bring you to your knees? Have you spent most of your career trying to figure out how one person can somehow have six or seven claims for the same back? Are you constantly worried your company will lose its group rating status? Do you often wonder if companies ever win hearings? Workers’ compensation is probably the biggest challenge for human resource managers and no doubt the single most common type of case. But there is good news: claims can be managed – and managed effectively – and employers CAN win workers’ compensation hearings. We will explore measures employers can implement NOW to save money and to regain control over their workforce, how to maintain good records in defending workers’ compensation claims, and how to use the tools in documenting injuries, conducting investigations and presenting defenses at administrative hearings.

    Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence (EI) has become a popular topic within organization development. However, there has been limited practice in how this relates practically to a company and specifically how to develop leaders within the organization. Understanding EI is vital in developing the competencies of self-awareness, intrinsic motivation, empathy and social skills. We will look at how to incorporate Emotional Intelligence to improve their performance in Self-Awareness, Decision-Making, and Work-Life Balance.

    Proactive Recruiting

The modern social media world demands a proactive approach to hiring! Help wanted signs and Internet job boards are no longer the ideal hiring strategy. These strategies keep churning up the same candidates looking for a job. We will look at ways to use social media to build relationships with candidates you don’t know yet by planning which positions are  best suited to proactive recruiting, identifying ideal candidates-then building and maintaining relationships until the time is right, and looking at measurement to decide if your talent acquisition strategy is working.
